Commenting – Is There a Right and a Wrong Way?
The power of effective blog commenting shouldn’t be underestimated, in some cases accounting for 25% of the sites’ traffic, but is there a right and a wrong way to do it? Should we be following a blog commenting etiquette? Yes! is the answer.
If you’ve been in Internet marketing for any length of time you will probably be aware that blog commenting is a good way of attaining back links to your blog, and this in turn helps it to rank in Google; but blog commenting isn’t just about creating back links, blog commenting should also be a means of building relationships and a sense of community. Just think; if you received no comments on your blog, you’d feel like you were just talking to the wind.
The number one piece of advice is: don’t spam! What some people do is just go out and put: ‘great stuff’ in the comments box of dozens of blog posts or even worse: ‘check out my great deals.’ When spamming like this, at best the comment is likely to be deleted but at worst it will tarnish the culprit’s credibility.
So what is the right way to comment? Well believe it or not it’s a good idea to read the post first! – Then at least you are more likely to be able to say something constructive. The point is that if you leave an insightful comment that adds value to the blog post you not only get other readers attention but also the attention of the author which will make him or her want to reply back.
It’s a good idea also to add a ‘Gravitar’ (a thumbnail sized photo) you can find places on the internet to help you do this. The advantage of a Gravitar is that you can be seen as a real person and not just a ’spam bot’. Also try not to leave a generic comment; if your comment could relate to any post, it may be seen as spam and deleted.
Another thing to bear in mind when commenting is – ‘is the blog popular’? Try to find blogs that have a reasonable amount of traffic and comments already, otherwise your comment is not likely to be seen. If you’re commenting on blog which has only a few visitors per day, you can’t expect floods of returning traffic to your blog.
Is it a do-follow blog? – There’s no point expecting back links if it isn’t. Usually bloggers will advertize it if it is a do follow blog, but if not, there are ways of checking; one way is by downloading ‘SEO for Firefox’ plug-in, which can be toggled on and off; this actually highlights no-follow blogs.
Lastly, bear in mind; ‘who do you actually want to read your comments?’- Try to target blogs that are in your niche; you obviously want people to return to your blog, so you need them to have similar interests – also Google likes related links!
