The Face Lift: Youth Restored
The Face lift is a cosmetic surgery that manipulates or removes excess skin to smooth out wrinkles and other minor deformities of the face. The Face Lift has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures requested by clients according to a 2008 study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The concept of lifting the upper layers of the face; in what we call a Face Lift dates back as early as the 1900s. In 1901, a Dr. Hollander performed the first facial lift. Dr. Hollander described a surgical procedure in which he had “lifted” the patient’s facial skin to remove winkles and to give the patient a more “youthful” appearance. Dr. Hollander made small incisions around the subject’s face, then pulled up the skin and removed any excess tissue. The incisions were stitched and the operation was complete.
Though the operation was successful, a problem arose. The surgery did not provide the patient with a permanent Face Lift. Dr. Hollander lifted the skin but neglected the fat and muscle tissue beneath the skin, as they were still saggy and aged. Though the operation showed immediate results, the look was temporary.
In 1910, a cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Lexer developed a new way of performing the Face Lift; by cutting deeper into the skin, not only lifting the face, but the muscles and fat as well. This cosmetic surgery produced a longer-lasting appearance of youth. This would become the leading procedure for almost a century.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s cosmetic surgeons Dr. Peyronie, Dr. Mitz and Dr. Skoog published a new technique for Face Lifts; the SMAS (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system) technique of facelifting. The SMAS concept soon emerged as the leading facelift technique. In 1968 Tord Skoog, of Sweden, developed a flap to elevate the muscles of the neck and lower face without detaching the skin. This development was the first innovation in facelift surgery. The facelifting procedure has since then evolved and has become a relatively simple procedure to perform, producing a better appearance while producing a low percentage of complications.
The Facelift is now one of the leading operations performed all around the nation.
