Will the DVLA Release a Single Digit Number Plate?
Given the fact that the United Arab Emirates have sold off single number license plates with startling success, people all over the internet have been wondering for ages if the DVLA will do the same at some point.
The UAE have seen the number plate “5″ go for the equivalent of £3 million, and the “1″ plate went for an astounding £7.25 million. If the DVLA were to do the same here, some suppliers believe they could easily receive similar amounts if not more. So why haven’t they?
There are those who believe that we will simply not see single number license plates being released in the UK, though why this is the case isn’t clear. This belief seems to be based on the fact that the DVLA adheres to specific systems. Even the plates of diplomats and the monarch follow rigid systems, rather than being outside any allowed pattern. This means that whilst formats might be created for special circumstances, individual plates will not. This allows for the D plates of diplomats and the HRH plates of royalty, but not single digit number plates. For this reason, some people expect that the closest we get will be the “XX01 XXX” number plates that will be released in January 2051, following the current format.
Others believe that the DVLA will make these plates available, though the time frame could be three years, twenty, or even a hundred years, depending on who you ask.
One issue that this raises is that if the DVLA break ranks for one set of unique plates, they may find themselves under pressure to do so for others; if they allow the plate “1″, then why not “TERRY” or “BILL”?
Finally, we must consider that Number Plates are an excellent money-making opportunity, and so the DVLA may not release them until it has exhausted all other options for unusual plates, possibly even using double digit plates before they issue the single digit ones.
The DVLA may never release these single number licence plates, or it could make an announcement next week. Who knows what the future holds?
