Become A Number Plate Supplier
If you are in the motor business, you may want to branch out and widen the prospects of your clientele.
Expanding into number plate supply can be a very lucrative business, especially with the increasing popularity in personalising our cars. The demand for registrations also means private plates are growing in value. So how do you go about it?
What is the register?
You need to get your name on the register of number plate suppliers. It is maintained by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) who ensure that the number plates are only supplied to people who can establish a legitimate connection with the vehicle.
If you’re one of the following, you can fall within the scope of the scheme, providing you supply the finished product: Manufacturers and assemblers, distributors and motor factors, motor dealers or retail outlets (including online). If you are a motor trader who fits plates to used vehicles to sell on then you need to be on the register.
How do I get on the register?
To apply to be on the register with the DVLA you can get in touch with them and complete an Application to Register as a Number Plate Supplier (also known as a V940 form). For each ‘place of business’ there is a one-off fee of £40. This covers the cost of administration and enforcement. The fee is charged once for each registered premises.
Once you’ve registered, you get what is called a supplier identity number (SID) for your head office. All your outlets will be under the same SID. If you’re a subsidiary company with a separate legal identity, then you need to apply for your own separate SID.
How long does registration last?
Your registration lasts as long as you’re supplying number plates as part of your business. You must inform the DVLA within 28 days if you are no longer trading as a number plate supplier. You must also keep them notified of any changes of address or name of supplier.
If you have been suspended from the register, the DVLA will write to you to establish whether you intend to continue trading as a supplier once the suspension period is over. They can then reinstate your registration after that.
Legal obligations
Being on the register means you have legal obligations as a supplier. Following the rules means your number plate business can run smoothly and DVLA officers are able to offer you advice and answer any questions you have.
It is an offence to supply to non-registered suppliers in the UK, unless the supplier is exempt. You can check the online version of the register of suppliers if you’re not quite sure.
Since 1st November 2008 it is an offence to supply plates that don’t comply with the law and this carries a fine of up to £2,500. Your customers should be aware that ‘show plates’ are merely what their names suggest, for show and cannot be supplied. Keeping sales records, SID numbers and documents is good practice.
Remember to dispose of unwanted number plates like cutting them up like you would an old Credit Card – after all you do not want it being used again.
The register does not apply to foreign number plates.
