How does a bathroom Timer Switch work?
I bought a timer switch with;

buttons, i was wondering why there was red, black, white, and green wire
Green is ground
Black is live to load
red is live
white is neutral
yellow for 3-way controls
I understand i need the white connected to a neutral wire but i was wondering why is this? how does this timer switch work that it needs a neutral wire? would it work to just connect the red and black?
So all in all how does this work?

Chris is correct. It requires the neutral to operate the electronics that make the timer function. It will not work with just the red and black connected. The yellow is not needed unless you have a 3-way switch.
The predecessor to this is the model 6230-M. These are great. Have installed many. Have had a lot of happy customers with them (even have 2 in my own home). This is just an upgraded version of the 6230-M. They added the 3-way capability and made the faceplates interchangeable. (this is more for the benefit of stores and us professionals, so we don’t have to stock different colors.)
