How To Color Gray Hair
“By common consent gray hairs are a crown of glory; the only object of respect that can never excite envy” ~ George Bancroft.
So you have just spotted your first gray hair? And sure enough you’re not really excited about it. In fact, most people get discouraged as soon as they see gray hair and get too depressed to do something about it! What you could do is color your grays so that they disappear and along with your worries! However, it is essential to remember that different hair types require different methods of dyeing and experimental chemical treatments may harm your hair in the long run if not done expertly. But why does your hair turn gray in the first place? It is because the melanin reduces and makes the hair transparent or gray and the grays turn into whites as they grow. Unfortunately, even if you have just one strand of gray hair in your crown of healthy black hair, it sticks out and becomes immediately visible. So let’s look into how you can color your grays.
Coloring Gray Hair
You need
- Dye Color of your choice
- Gloves
- Applicator Brush
- Hair Dye Mixing Bowl
- A Mirror
- Old Towel
Instructions
- Select a dye color preferably a darker color so that it fully masks the gray color. A level 3 color is something that has a permanent effect on your hair and covers grays completely.
- Make sure all surfaces in the room, your clothes included, where you are likely to come in contact with are covered with newspaper and towels.
- Place a towel around your shoulders so that no dye comes in touch with your clothes and skin because it is almost impossible to wash away from clothes.
- Mix the dye according to the package instructions.
Applying The Dye
- Put your gloves on to avoid any sticking later on!
- Make small sections in your hair. Now you can see the grays in your hair clearly. Apply dye to the areas where the grays are first so that the dye sits longer on them.
- Smear some dye to each section of the hair using the applicator.
- Do this with all the sections, making sure you’ve covered the back and front or else the colour won’t be evenly spread.
- Pile the hair on top of your hair and let it sit that way for as long as it says on the package. It usually says around 45 minutes.
- Using a damp cloth, wipe off all the excess dye which would’ve adhered to the back of your neck.
- Sit back and relax now, waiting for the 45 minutes to end.
- After this, rinse the dye off with warm water thoroughly. Apply the conditioner given in the kit and let it stand for about 5 min before washing it off.
Tips
- Gray hair is very brittle and can break easily so wash the hair with precaution.
- Color-sensitive hair preserving shampoos and conditioners must be used on colored hair to retain the color longer.
- Some stylists say it is better to soften your gray hair before coloring it. For this, apply peroxide on the hair and comb.
- If you have only a few gray hairs that you want to get rid of, then do spot dyeing. This means that apply dye only on the grays rather than opting for the full head application.
