What does the energy returned on investment (EROI) tell us about a potential energy source?
A. a high EROI ratio means an energy source is worth extracting
B. An energy source with a high EROI ratio will require a massive monetary investment before it can be extracted, whereas one with low EROI ratio does not.
C. and energy source with a low EROI is very limited and may run out soon.
D. whatever the EROI is when the analysis is first done is going to be the EROI for that energy source forever.
E an energy source with low EROI will cause little environmental damage
If one comprehends the subject matter of each answer as well as the scope and intent of the question, this is basically a no brainer as it works in applied economics on a daily basis with just about everything. It’s the basic law of supply and demand and thus the determination of price vs cost of production. As such, answer A is the only one that applies because the figure will tell you nothing about required investment, available quantities, future pricing or environmental effects as implied in the other four.
A good example of this applied in marketing is found on the below referenced energy products marketing site, found specifically under the first tab: Solar and Wind, Shop, Home Energy Savers, Energy Saver Packages. If you will click on each individual package and read the description, scrolling down to the very bottom of the page (on both windows, as 2 are open here), it will show you a comparative Return on Investment chart indicating how long it will take to get all of your money back through purchase of that specific package. I find it interesting that the highest ROI is found on the lower priced packages, as they contain the highest ROI green products and less efficient ones are added as you spend more, thus they encourage you to do the best first. Smart marketing with consumer interest first in mind.
