Using Solar Panels in street lights
Maintenance of street lights come under the lead of municipalities and half of the electrical expenditure gets wasted only on lightening the streets. The replacement of old and fused bulbs with the newer ones timely could be a great problem for the people working for municipalities. A regular checking is also required. But if solar panels could use as solar powers street lights then workers will be tension free and municipality can save millions of dollars that are been spent on lightening all the roads of a city or county. Not only electricity cost will reduce, maintenance cost gets also reduced by a significant amount.
Despite all these advantages solar panels are not being used in lightening the streets because their installation cost is very high. Though it’s a one time investment but still many of the governments are not in the stage to grant such a huge investment in installing the solar panels on street lights. By using solar panels streets could be more greener and cleaner and the energy from the sun or sunlight may also can e utilized in a better manner.
By the advancement in the field of semiconductors, some cost effective products have been developed over a period of time. Sun usually radiates almost 1000 watts per square meter but only 30% can be utilized to produce electricity by a typical Solar Panel. The energy that was harvested in the day time may get stored in the batteries and could be used in night hours. By using conventional charge controllers we can control the amount of conversion losses.
As solar panels are p-n junctions, they do not work as normal power sources. They have an operating point at which the electricity produced is at its maximum. And if there is any disturbance in this point then it may decrease the efficiency of the solar panel. To have the full utilization of the solar panel i.e. in order to extract the full energy, a fully electronic system known as max peak power tracked or MPPT is required. This is a DC converter that works as a mediator and allow optimum load on the panel to function in its peak power state. Though the max peak point or MPP depends upon the amount of sunlight and temperature of the panel, The MPPT constantly adapts itself to maximize the energy conversion.
Lighting street lights by using Solar Energy is a great idea to formulate if funds allow you to do so. As it is the decision of the municipality but still if they take this option then it may cause a problem at initial stage but sooner or later they will fetch many advantages out of it and can see the reduced electricity bills over a period of time.
