It Looks Bad When A Pro Photographer Runs Out Of Batteries
I work for a company that specializes in all manners of public relations, from advertising and marketing to speech writing and traditional PR functions. I’m a photographer by trade. You may have seen some of my work if you read fashion magazines. I also shot that advert with Johnny Depp. I arrived on the pro scene too late to be worrying about lugging rolls of film about -thank goodness for small mercies- but I do carry a lot of batteries with me. Batteries and memory cards, that’s what a photographer in the digital age simply cannot do without. I was at the launderette one day and I hear this god-awful banging coming from my machine. Everyone’s staring at me like I was a wally who’d decided to wash my pet rock for amusement. Turns out I’d forgotten a fairly big procell (I think it was a D cell) in my pocket.
Speaking of embarrassing moments, the Depp shoot was another one where I found myself a little red faced, and when I first learned the all important lesson of always carrying plenty of spare batteries. Fortunately, he’s a very forgiving guy because some of the prima donnas I work with would have pitched a fit. I can’t even remember what the product was, just that it was Johnny and I were in a really tony restaurant that had been booked for the afternoon. I had checked all of the equipment before we left the studio, but apparently, I somehow missed the batteries. When it came time to set up the shot and Johnny’s people dropped him off, I went to power up my camera and nothing. The batteries were back at the office, in the bloody recharger. No problem, I thought, I always carry plenty of spares, I’m sure I have a procell or two in my bag. Except I’d left my bag in the lorry and it was off circling the block in search of a car park that it could fit in. I could tell Johnny knew something was wrong. I sent an assistant scurrying out in search of a shop while I ordered a few pints, supposedly to loosen everyone up; she came back a few minutes later, casually passed me a Marks & Spencer bag containing a few packs of Duracells, and we were underway like nothing had happened. But he knew I’d mucked up.
I’ve since caught on to a web site operated by a chum of mine from film school.
