I Hereby Question Potential Ulterior Motives of HIPPA Regulations
Well, when it comes to personal privacy in the United States, it seems that are elected representatives are busy invading our privacy, not protecting it. Therefore, there must be more to the story, and it turns out there is, let me explain.
First, the information technology sector, and all the large computer companies have a huge lobbying power in Washington DC, and by requiring personal privacy in medical records, that meant all the hospitals had to spend quite a bit of money to secure their data, and to collect and store it. This means they had to buy servers, computer systems, databases, and hire more IT staff, were consultants, if this was a big boom for the IT sector after the Silicon Valley crash. It also meant medical costs increased for all of us.
Additionally, I believe there was even more to it than that. Was it really about health records privacy, or was it rushed through to assist in covering up industry environmental concerns? How so you ask, well, by leaving no access to potential cancer clusters information for studies? About the same time, it was discovered that additive used for fuel had leaked into the groundwater, and may cost oil companies with huge amounts of money. Congress went out of their way, since indeed it was their fault, as they made the oil companies put in that additive through regulations.
Also, the computers were getting very good at determining the causes of such cancers, by isolating the clusters, and this left room for class-action lawyers to sue large corporations – the same large corporations with large lobbying power. Without that data, the academic researchers would not be able to figure out how many people in a given area, that ate a certain type of food, that worked in a certain industry, where they drink the same water from the same region ended up with cancer, or some wicked disease.
In fact, I believe it was billed as personal privacy of your medical records to protect you against insurance companies raising your rates because they knew something about you that they normally wouldn’t know. But the reality is you release your medical records to insurance companies all the time when you sign up for medical insurance.
Now it’s true that there are people who don’t want their medical records displayed next to their name on the Internet, however having all that data to look through, can really help us fine tune in to keep the United States one of the most healthiest places in the world. We still need that data in the public domain, and we can through anonymizing it.
Therefore, and I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I believe we need to make this data available to the academic researchers, so we can clearly know what’s going on to protect ourselves and our families. Please consider this.
