Do you have to turn off the electric just to change the cover on an outlet?
I dont want to replace the outlet, just the cover.
It is recommended to because just inside the cover are bare live wires attached to the outlet. Also the screw holding the cover on is part of the grounding system so if there is a short it maybe live also. As long as you do not allow anything to go inside the box you should be ok in theory although I think its better to be safe than sorry.
