Custom Floor Cloths – The History of Antique Floor Coverings
Do you love to experiment with classic pieces of decorative items in your home? Are you keen about using antique floor coverings to make your home look more elegant and fashionable? If you answered yes to both questions, then I’m sure that you will definitely love to decorate your home with custom floor cloths.
There are various stories as to how these floor coverings were first created. But a number of sources tell us that they were invented in France sometime during the fifteenth century, although the French did not use these items as coverings for floors. Instead they used them as decorative items for walls and tables.
The British were inspired by this French creation and decided to use them as something more practical. They were used to insulate the floors during the cold winter and as replacements for floor rugs during summer. Various shapes, colors and patterns were incorporated into the floor cloths to make them look more attractive and appealing. Their artistic designs were often imitations of expensive floor coverings found in stylish and expensive homes. This practice provided people the luxury of having fashionable floor coverings without having to spend much money.
Strong, durable and heavy canvases were often used as material. Patterns and designs were Hand Painted, often by the women of the house. Eventually wooden blocks were used as stencils for printing the designs. As this form of art became more popular, an altogether new industry was established.
The demand for floor cloths rose in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Factories were built in important cities such as London and Bristol to accommodate the growing demands of the public. Many affluent personalities in Europe requested to have custom floor cloths specially made for their stylish homes. Eventually, Americans were introduced to this art form as many European companies began to export to America.
The industry continued to flourish up until the latter part of the nineteenth century. It only started to decline when linoleum was invented. People chose to cover their floors with this material as it was more practical and economical. The highly sought after floor cloths literally disappeared in the early part of the twentieth century.
In the middle part of the 1900’s, antique floor coverings once again came into style and the once forgotten form of art became popular again. Demands for custom floor cloths started to rise as people became more aware of the value of these classic items.
