Will We Eventually Be Able To Utilize Water/Hydrogen As A Type of Fuel?
While oil and gas prices seem to be rising on a yearly basis all over the world, many scientists are looking at alternative methods of fuel, including turning water and hydrogen into gas. There are two natural elements that join together to make water, and hydrogen is one of them. Hydrogen is not a common source of energy at the moment. However, it is an energy carrier as a great amount of energy is needed to extract it from water. It is also quite useful as a compact energy source in items such as batteries and fuel cells. Many people think there is potential in turning hydrogen into some form of energy source in the future and numerous companies are trying to develop it.
There is enormous potential for hydrogen to be used as a fuel in the future as it is an environmentally-clean fuel which does not possess any harmful side effects of greenhouse gases. However, before it can be used as source of fuel scientists need to figure out an infrastructure to store and move it. Engineers are currently trying to come up with a way to store it effectively, such as into a large molecule. When people want to draw the hydrogen safely and easily from the molecule they will need a catalyst and scientists are trying out various theories.
The most clear-cut element known to man is hydrogen as each atom contains just one proton. It is also the most plentiful type of gas in the world. Did you that hydrogen bears the maximum energy matter of all known common fuel by weight? This is approximately three times more than gasoline. However, it has the lowest energy substance by volume, which is roughly four times less than gas).
Hydrogen is a gas when it is at normal temperature and pressure and can be created from a multitude of sources including, fossil fuels, water, and biomass. It is also a by product of other types of chemical processes.
At present, hydrogen can be used in areas where it is difficult to use electricity as it can be stored and moved to wherever it is required as inside a Fuel Cell, hydrogen and oxygen join and create electricity. This process is completed without producing any harmful fumes. This makes hydrogen an almost perfect fuel as the earth’s supply of water is almost endless.
But while hydrogen can be stored and transported at the moment, it is not meant for mass transportation as it is highly explosive when in the form of gas. One temporary solution is the fact that solid materials can absorb and store the gas in a safer way, but these materials are typically quite heavy.
This is why researchers still trying to figure out what hydrogen storage materials would be more effective. It is believed that a combination of magnesium, nickel, and titanium could be used for storage as it is a relatively light metal alloy. The researchers are trying out thousands of various metal alloys to see which ones are ideal at soaking up hydrogen. If any of the tests prove to be successful, it could result in hydrogen becoming the clean fuel of the future and in theory; people will be able to turn water into gas.
